What makes a good team? a good draft record

If you review the Flyers' draft record, you can immediately see the link to when their team performed badly. The Flyers are in danger of falling into that pit again. Sound alarmist?

The Flyers had two recent bad drafts: 2004, 2005. If you compare those years to other teams that are having success, well see for yourself:

2005
Crosby, Ryan, and Letang

2004
Ovechkin, Malkin, Green, Franzen, Ladd, Krecji, Versteeg, and Kennedy

Generally there are about 30 players in each draft year that end up having a career of any length in the NHL (300+ games played).

The successful teams seem to get at least one of those types a year. Sometimes they get two or more.
