David Letterman's Time Has Finally Come

linky

This is an interesting premise, Dave is now free from having to compete with the middle america style of Leno and can now get back to making TV for the coasts.

  1. I think curiosity and familiarity are the big issues. Conan benefits from the former, but suffers from the latter.

I think Dave surpasses Conan at 1130 eventually if not sooner. The reason? Leno's gonna siphon off a lot of guests who'd rather do prime time than late night and will choose Leno over Conan. And if they do late night, they will be inclined to switch it up and not do NBC (conan) again. OTOH, NBC can now offer same week appearances to big time celebs to do Leno one night and Conan another, all in the same city, which will appeal to some.

But I think familiarity will win the day. Leno's older viewers, esp, will go to dave. No one likes the new guy, and Conan is pretty new to 1130 viewers, only about 25% of which hang on until the 1230 show.

Ferguson must be steaming since dave just re-upped again, and now he's battling Fallon almost as an after thought. OTOH, his ratings are going to increase if Dave consistently beats Conan since 1130 ratings are the biggest driver of 1230 ratings.
